If the chance to change history opened up, what would you change?
In 1914 the bloodiest conflict in history began with the murder of two people; man and wife, together in love, and in the wrong place at the wrong time. What would happen if you could arrive in early 1914; in a time yet to see the atrocities which await, and do something differently. Could you stop a war?
Hugh Stanton has been given that very chance. Recruited for a mission that would change the fate of every human being from 1914 onwards. A time when Germany was the most modern, cultured, civilised, prosperous capitol in the world. Hugh completes his mission, changes the course of history, falls in love, and then everything starts to go wrong.
Ben Elton has written a fantastic book about the possibility of changing history. Wouldn’t we all like to go back and stop World War One? Wouldn’t that be a good idea? ‘Time And Time Again’ is a well written and well thought out book that I thoroughly enjoyed. The descriptions of 1914 made me feel as though I were there, as though I were seeing with my own eyes a pre-war world at peace. I felt the excitement of Hugh Stanton as he walked through Cambridge, Constantinople, Sarajevo, and Berlin, new and old.
I think this book is wonderful. It is a comment on our current state of affairs, that we’ve ended up where we are because of the actions of a handful of people throughout time. It also makes you wonder about what effect your actions will have on the future. What difference could a minute make? The difference between life and death, going or not going, doing or not doing? This book made me think, and I like that. It also made me smile. I worried, and I got a bit emotional. I don’t think it’s the greatest book in history, maybe Mr Elton could go back and re-write it time and time again until he makes it the most important book in the world, but then I think it would lose some of its charm. It really was entertaining, but not in a completely life changing way. It’s not as emotional or as moving as ‘Two Brothers’ was but it was still really good.
In short, this book is well worth a read. It’s not too heavy and it is really well written. Maybe it will make you realise that you can’t answer any question by killing someone.
